Wikki Tourists Football Club of Bauchi reclaimed top spot in Conference C of the Nigeria National League NNL after an impressive 3-1 win over visiting Mighty Jets of Jos with Wonderson Yakubu stealing the spotlight with a stunning hat-trick in just his major appearance of the season.
The atmosphere at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium Bauchi was electric, and it took only 10 minutes for the home fans to erupt as Yakubu wearing jersey No 28 calmly slotted home the opener, beating the Jets’ goalkeeper with a composed finish.
The in-form forward doubled his tally in the 40th minute, replicating a similar move before launching a precise angled shot into the bottom corner with the second gold.
The Maikaba tutored boys went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead, dominating possession and play.
Coach Abdu Maikaba made strategic substitutions early in the second half to strengthen his side further, and the plan paid off in the 76th minute, where Yakubu completed his hat-trick in style, heading home from a brilliant long pass by dependable left-back Bismark Duah.
Mighty Jets managed a consolation in the 86th minute, when Ironsi Nickson broke through the Wikki defence and fired home with a cheeky toe-poke that left the keeper stranded.
In his post-match interview, Coach Maikaba expressed delight with the team’s performance:
“This is a great result and a morale booster for our promotion campaign. The boys showed character, and we’ll keep pushing. I’m specially proud with the fans, they’ve been outstanding throughout the game” he added
