Taraba Govt Reactivates Gen Faransa Led Taskforce on Environmental Protection

The Taraba State Government has reactivated and re-energised the General Faransa led Special Taskforce on Environmental Protection Against the Activities of Miners/Felling of Rosewood in Taraba State.

In a Statement on Tuesday in Jalingo, the state capital, the Secretary to the Government of Taraba State, Chief Gebon Timothy Kataps stressed that the measure is to reinforced the Executive Order 5 following the re-emergence of illegal mining activities with the attendant consequences on the environment.

“Following the security meeting held on 7th October 2024 and the review of Mining Activities in the state, Government notes with dismay the regrouping of illegal miners at various mining sites where they had hitherto been dislodged by a Special Taskforce on Environmental Protection.

“The general public is hereby reminded that the Executive Order 5 on Environmental Protection against the Activities of Miners/Felling of Rosewood in the state issued by His Excellency, Dr Agbu Kefas, The Governor of Taraba State is still in full force”.

In addition, the Statement said the security meeting has approved the constitution of similar Taskforces in all the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.

The membership of the Taskforces includes 4; members each from the Nigeria Army, the Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps.

Others are 5 members of the Taraba Marshal, 2 personnel from the Nigeria Immigration Service and a member of the Directorate of State Security Service, DSS.

” The Command structure of the Local Government Taskforces are to be led by the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police and the NSCDC.

“That means, the Nigeria Army will lead the Taskforce where they have the dominance else the Nigeria Police and/or the Civil Defense as the case may be.

“All the Local Government Taskforces are to liaise and cooperate with the State Taskforce for smooth operations across the state”.

The Statement therefore advised the general public to give the Taskforces the necessary cooperation for the protection of the environment..
