Taraba Gov Pledges Support for Sports Development

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting sporting activities across the state.
The governor reiterated this when Houston-based tennis professional, Nduka Odizo, paid him a courtesy visit at the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo.
The emotionally charged meeting underscored the transformative power of sports, resilience, and the value of giving back to one’s roots.
Reflecting on life’s journey, Governor Kefas described it as a path marked by both trials and triumphs, asserting that divine guidance often favours genuine intentions.
He expressed admiration for Odizo’s story and pledged his administration’s unwavering support for the tennis star and other young talents in Taraba State.
“Sports is more than just a game. It builds leaders, teaches life skills, fosters unity, and stimulates economic development,” the governor stated.
He also paid glowing tribute to Coach Bulus Useni, former Director of Sports in the state, recognizing his longstanding contributions to Taraba’s sporting community.
In his remarks, Nduka Odizo expressed deep appreciation for the warm reception, recounting his journey from Delta State to being adopted by an American family and eventually rising to prominence as a professional tennis player in the United States.
Odizo announced plans to establish a Sports College in Taraba State, aimed at discovering and nurturing the hidden talents scattered across the region.
He also called for the creation of a pension scheme for retired athletes, noting the financial hardships many face after their careers.
Recalling a pivotal moment in his early days, Odizo fondly remembered being defeated by Coach Bulus Useni, calling it a “humbling and inspiring experience” that shaped his sportsmanship.
He further revealed that over sixty tennis players in Houston have agreed to launch an annual October Tennis Tournament in Taraba State.
The initiative aims to reconnect with their homeland and serve as a platform for scouting emerging talents.
Coach Bulus, in his address, reminisced about his time with Nduka during their active years and pledged his full support toward realizing the vision for sports development in Taraba State.
As a symbol of goodwill, Odizo presented a tennis racket to Governor Kefas — a gesture warmly received and described by the governor as a symbol of a promising partnership for the future.
