Taraba Flags Off ACReSAL Climate-Smart Project, Distributes Farm Equipment

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has launched the Climate-Smart Clean Energy and Waste Management Programme under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.
The ceremony, held at the Jolly Nyame Stadium, also featured the distribution of modern agricultural equipment, including tractors, water pumps, power tillers and a swamp buggy, to farmers across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Taraba State Steering Committee Chairperson of ACReSAL and Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Hajia Aishat Barde, commended Governor Kefas, the Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and development partners for supporting the project in Taraba State.
She said the deployment of the equipment reflected the administration’s commitment to environmental protection, food security and climate resilience.
According to her, the assets provided are aimed at improving livelihoods, boosting agricultural productivity and strengthening resilience against climate change.
Barde noted that Taraba has gained the confidence of the Federal Government and the World Bank through its effective implementation of the project.
She added that ACReSAL activities have now been expanded to all 16 local government areas following the approval of new catchment management areas.
She urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the equipment and maintain them in line with the project guidelines.

He said Taraba, which previously lagged behind in the project, is now ranked among the top five performing states under ACReSAL.
The Minister explained that the project targets land degradation, water management and afforestation challenges across the country.
He, however, reminded stakeholders that the programme is expected to end on March 31, 2028, and called for measures to sustain its gains.
He also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting environmental initiatives in semi-arid regions.

He said compensation cheques presented to beneficiaries demonstrated fairness and accountability in project implementation.
The Governor also disclosed that the ACReSAL project in Taraba has been upgraded into a permanent structure named the Taraba State Agro-Climatic and Watershed Management Agency.
He said the move would ensure continuity and sustainability of environmental and agricultural support programmes beyond the lifespan of the current project.
Earlier, the Governor flagged off the Bobboji drainage project to address recurring flooding in affected communities.
Beneficiaries of the agricultural equipment, expressed appreciation, saying the tools would reduce labour and improve crop yields.
The event highlights Taraba State’s efforts to strengthen climate resilience, promote sustainable agriculture and protect the environment through institutional reforms and strategic partnerships.
