NUJ Condemns Threats Against Badeggi FM 90.1 by Niger State Government

By Lynn Adda

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) National Secretariat has strongly condemned the recent threats by the Niger State Government, under Governor Umaru Bago, to shut down Badeggi FM 90.1, a privately owned radio station based in Minna, and to demolish its building.

Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, NUJ National President

The NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi who made the condemnation in a Press Statement this Sunday, a copy of which was obtained by Echo Express, stressed that such threats represent a serious intimidation tactic and a violation of press freedom and due process.

The NUJ reminds all parties that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is the sole statutory authority empowered to license, regulate, and sanction broadcast stations in Nigeria.

“Any attempt by a state government to unilaterally interfere with the operations or physical premises of a media house is an unconstitutional overreach of executive power.
“Freedom of the press is a constitutional right and a cornerstone of democracy. “Attempts to stifle independent journalism through threats, intimidation, or arbitrary directives undermine democratic governance and the fundamental rights of citizens”.

The NUJ therefore called on Governor Umaru Bago to immediately withdraw the threat of closure and demolition, and to allow the NBC to investigate and address any alleged violations through the proper legal and regulatory channels.

“The NUJ remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting journalists and media organizations, ensuring they operate freely and without fear of harassment or political interference. We urge civil society, professional bodies, and the public to join us in defending press freedom and upholding the rule of law”.
