NMA Calls for Coordinated, Accountable Health Care System

By Henry Agbu

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has called for a more coordinated, accountable and efficient healthcare system that truly reflects the realities of the country’s health sector.

This call is contained in a press statement issued by the NMA National President, Dr. Bala Mohammed Audu, and conveyed by the Taraba State Chairman of the Association, Dr. Adamu Hamidu Kara, in commemoration of the 2025 Physicians Week.

This year’s celebration is themed “Health Care as a Value Chain: Building Efficiency from Policy to Patients”.

According to the NMA, the theme emphasizes bridging the gap between policy formulation and practical, quality service delivery to patients.

Dr. Audu expressed concern over the high mortality rate in the country, stressing that healthcare practitioners must ensure policies are matched with concrete actions to build a robust and resilient health system.

He noted that the Physicians Week also provides an opportunity for members to reflect on their mental health and well-being while charting a sustainable course for the future of the profession.

The statement highlighted the urgent need for investments in healthcare workforce development, equitable distribution of personnel, motivation, and retention strategies to curb brain drain.

It further called for the rehabilitation of healthcare facilities, the provision of essential medicines, and the establishment of functional referral systems across the country.

The NMA also emphasized the need for comprehensive health policy reforms anchored on implementation and measurable accountability.

As part of activities marking the 2025 Physicians Week, the Taraba State Chapter of the Association donated relief materials to the Orphanage of the GMCN in Jalingo.
