By Abubakar Hardawa
Marketers have identified the activities of middlemen and high transportation costs as reasons for the daily increases in food prices in the markets.
The Chairman of the Muda Lawal Market in Bauchi, Mika’il Abubakar stated this when he received officials from the Federal Competition and Consumers Protection Commission, FCCPC.
The high costs and activities of middlemen in the supply chain are leading to the daily increases in food prices that consumers are experiencing in the market.
The Chairman called on the Federal government to force industries using food items to produce their own raw materials to reduce the role of middlemen.
The FCCPC’s North East zonal Director, Dauda Ahmadu Waja said the agency is responsible for protecting consumer interests, and they are discussing with traders and market associations to find the reasons for the daily food price increases, with the aim of making recommendations to the Federal Government.
