LG Autonomy; Gov Kefas Inaugurates

The Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas has inaugurated the recently constituted Local Government Autonomy Advisory Committee.
The ceremony took place at the exco chamber Government House Jalingo on Mondays.
Speaking at the event, Governor Agbu Kefas said the recent supreme court judgement on full financial autonomy for local government aligns with his administration’s commitment to set a clear part for local government administration in the state.
He stressed that his administration conducted local government election to ensure that people at the grassroots have leaders that can effectively represent and lead them.
Governor Agbu Kefas equally revealed that in April this year, a communication was sent to the Bureau for Local Government, Traditions and Chieftaincy Affairs to allow local government Chairmen to manage joint account and administrative affairs.

The Governor stressed that workshop to boost local government Chairmen capacity on governance and others was also organized which has ensured stability and efficiency in local government administration in Taraba State.
He reiterated his commitment to selfless service, accountability and transparency in governance.
In his remarks, Chairman of the advisory committee who doubled as Chairman Taraba State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government, Traditions and Chieftaincy Affairs, Rt Hon Abel Peter Diah thanked Governor Agbu Kefas for his swift response to implementation of local government autonomy.

The legislator affirmed that Local Government autonomy has been on the front burner since the inception of democracy in Nigeria and described the recent supreme court judgement on full financial autonomy for local government as victory for democracy.
The terms of reference of the committee includes implementation of oversight functions, capacity building, financial autonomy, administrative reforms, security coordination, community engagements, evaluation and feedback and others that will be added to them where necessary.
