Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas has tasked chairmen of the sixteen local government areas of the State on accountability and transparency in service delivery to the people.
While declaring open a two day workshop on Accountability and Good Governance at the Jolly Nyame stadium Jalingo, the governor said, leadership is not about accruing wealth, but a responsibility to serve the people
The Governor further disclosed that leadership at the grassroot level is not a privilege for personal gain but a duty that requires integrity and transparency.
“This workshop is a call to duty for all local government leaders to strengthen their commitment to governance”, he said.
Governor Kefas, who emphasized that government policies and programs initiated across the State must be implemented added that the people’s welfare remains the priority of his administration.
He however, urged the traditional rulers to uphold their responsibilities as custodians of culture and peace, and warned them against indiscriminate sales of land.
In a remark, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau for Local Government, Tradition and Chieftaincy Affairs (BLGT&CA), Engr. Godfrey Andrew Dame, added that the conference would help bridge the governance gap, promote the adoption of best practices in good governance across the State.
Providing an overview of the workshop, the Resource person, Maj. Gen. Henry Ayamasaowei (Rtd) of Euclase Resources ltd said the workshop would assess the performance of the participants and afford them the opportunity to chart a way forward as it concerns equitable service delivery to the people state.
“The workshop would provide the participants an opportunity to assess the progress that the current local government council officials have made in the last two years”,
“It would also enable the participants to reflect on the critical roles of the local government administration in the State”, he said.
The State chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Dr. Aminu Jauro Hassan described the workshop as timely saying they, as participants, have been sensitized on how to discharge their duties with a view to meeting the yearnings of the people.
“Our sole responsibilities as participants were to provide the basic social amenities to the people and this must be according to the funds allocated to us”, he said
