Happiness in Giving: Bishop Hammawa Urges Hope, Generosity at Jalingo Christmas Carol

The Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Charles Michael Hammawa, has called on Christians to embrace joy, love and generosity as the true meaning of Christmas, urging Nigerians not to let fear or hardship overshadow the celebration of Christ’s birth.

Speaking at the Annual Bishop’s Christmas Carol in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital themed “Happiness in Giving,” Bishop Hammawa said Christmas is a living reminder of God’s enduring love.
While acknowledging insecurity and the destruction of communities in parts of Taraba State, he stressed that God has not abandoned His people.
He noted that although salvation is God’s free gift, its fruits depend on human cooperation, adding that justice, peace and restoration can only thrive when people choose love, compassion and goodwill.
He urged Christians to go beyond material gifts by sharing genuine love and promoting unity.
The Bishop also appreciated ASP Paul G. Sylvester for sponsoring this year’s carol as an act of thanksgiving and service, announcing that future editions would be open to sponsorship by individuals and groups.
He encouraged the faithful to remain joyful and hopeful, recalling St. Paul’s call to rejoice always in the Lord.
Earlier, the Vicar for Administration of the Diocese and CAN Chairman in Taraba State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Williams Awoshiri, said the theme, drawn from Proverbs 11:25, highlights joyful and selfless generosity.

He urged Christians to celebrate Christmas with contentment, live within their means and remain hopeful about Nigeria while working and praying for peace.
In her remarks, the Taraba State Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Augustina G. Yahaya, described the carol as solemn and uplifting, saying it reflected the true spirit of Christmas and reminded people to share God’s gifts freely.
Other speakers praised the growing importance of the annual carol. Engineer Innocent Dominic, KSM, described it as a major event ushering in the Christmas season, while Hon. Terence Joseph commended the quality of performances and called for greater sponsorship to encourage talent development.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to ASP Paul G. Sylvester of the Nigeria Police Force, Mobile 40 Squadron, Jalingo, in recognition of his 25 years of service, recent promotion and dedication as a chorister.
He thanked God for the recognition, saying it would inspire him to serve the Church, the nation and humanity even more.
