Govt must ensure a secure future for girl children across Nigeria

A non-governmental organisation, The Centre for Advocacy, Transparency, and Accountability Initiative (CATAI), has urged the federal government to enhance security and protection for schoolgirls nationwide.
CATAI’s Executive Director, Abubakar Sadiq Muazu, made this call during a press briefing marking the start of the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Attacks on Education in Nigeria, themed: “Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls,” held in Maiduguri on Monday.
He expressed concern over the recent increase in attacks on educational facilities in Kebbi and Niger states, urging the federal government to develop strategies to safeguard students and learning environments.
Sadiq stated, “As we unite to combat all forms of violence against women and girls, we cannot ignore the heartbreaking incidents unfolding in our country. Just days ago, the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi and Niger states shocked the nation.”
He added, “These young girls, like millions of others, wanted to learn, dream, and build a brighter future. Sadly, their hopes now hang in the balance due to their abduction.”
Sadiq further explained, “This tragic event is not only an attack on a school but a direct assault on girls, their ambitions, and the fragile progress we have all worked hard to achieve,” expressing sympathy and calling for action.
He highlighted that community volunteers, educators, development partners, and humanitarian organisations have long invested considerable effort in encouraging girls to return to school.
“As an organisation, we condemn this attack in the strongest terms. Our hearts and prayers are with the families, relatives, and the Nigerian government during this tragic time. We call on the government to intensify efforts to protect educational facilities and learning environments.”
Sadiq emphasised, “We urge duty bearers and security agencies to expedite the safe release of the abducted girls and ensure their safety and well-being according to international standards.
“Let us UNiTE to protect children and women in schools, end physical and digital violence, and uphold the rights and dignity of every woman and girl.”
He reaffirmed, “As we observe the 16 Days of Activism, we reaffirm that violence against girls, whether online, at home, in communities, or in schools, is unacceptable.”
Sadiq concluded, “The safety of every girl, both physically and digitally, is a shared responsibility. Today, we stand in solidarity with affected families and communities and renew our commitment to promoting safe learning environments where every girl can thrive, free from harm.”
