Gov Buni Named National Ambassador for Domestic, Eco-Tourism

The Yobe State Governor, Hon. (Dr) Mai Mala Buni, has been conferred with the title of National Ambassador for Domestic and Eco-Tourism at the 4th National Conference and Exhibition on Domestic and Eco-Tourism in Nigeria.

The prestigious event, held at Azikiwe Hall of Nicon Luxury Hotel, Area 11, Garki, Abuja, recognized key figures across Nigeria for their contributions to the development and promotion of sustainable tourism.
This year’s conference was themed “Sustainable Tourism Practices: Challenges and Opportunities for Domestic and Eco-Tourism Development”.
Governor Buni’s recognition highlights Yobe State’s growing commitment to repositioning itself as a viable tourism destination through strategic investments in infrastructure, cultural heritage preservation, and eco-tourism initiatives.
Also honoured at the event were the Hon. Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, Tourism and Solid Minerals, Rt. Hon. Kaigama Umar, with the Ambassador of Domestic and Eco-Tourism award, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Zannah Ali Ibrahim, who was named National Tourism Personnel of the Year.
The Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Zannah Ali Ibrahim, received all the awards on behalf of the Governor and the Commissioner.
In his remarks at the ceremony, the Commissioner praised the organizers, led by Chief (Dr) Obinna Ugochukwu Alexander Onyercha, for convening stakeholders to explore pathways for sustainable tourism development.
“Yobe may not yet be the first destination that comes to mind when tourism is mentioned, but that’s precisely why this conference matters.
“From the unique desert landscapes and ancient heritage to vibrant cultural festivals, Yobe holds immense untapped tourism potential.”
He noted that under Governor Buni’s administration, tourism has become a central pillar in the state’s economic diversification strategy.
The government has continued to invest in infrastructure, improve security, and support community-based tourism to attract local and international visitors.
“Despite past challenges, we are rebuilding Yobe with purpose and vision. Tourism, we believe, is a powerful tool for development, job creation, and social cohesion,” he added.
The Permanent Secretary disclosed that Yobe State has secured a partnership with Community Collaborative Services Ltd to host Nigeria’s first international desert car racing competition, slated for November to December 2025.
“The groundbreaking event will take place across the breathtaking Tulo-Tulo desert and the majestic sand dunes of Yusufari and Yunusari Local Government Areas—marking a bold step toward positioning Yobe as a hub for desert sports and adventure tourism.
“This historic initiative will not only boost Yobe’s tourism profile but also open doors for new economic and cultural opportunities,” he said.
The awards and upcoming desert event underscore Yobe’s growing presence in Nigeria’s tourism landscape and the state’s commitment to redefining its narrative through innovation, resilience, and visionary leadership.
