Education: NOUN introduces skills acquisition in own school – Don

The Vice Chancellor of National open university of Nigeria, (NOUN) Professor Olufemi Peters, has said the NOUN staff Nursery and Primary school has introduced skills acquisition programme in their own school curriculum.

Professor Olufemi Peters is speaking while declaring open of the 8th inter House sports competition in Kaduna.

Represented by Professor Sammani Rabo Butswat, the VC explained that the vocational skills includes training tailoring, plumbing, electrical installations.

“We already had 189 pupils interested in the various aspect of these vocational training, we have approved a small stipend payment but these may not start immediately.

He maintained that So for these session is free but by next session we will decide for the stipend to be paid by parents whose pupils will participate and we will also decide on the participation period it’s going to be within the session only or it’s during holiday they can still camp and we want still expand it to include computer appreciation.

“We also want to introduce these young guys as you’re young girls to electronic library they should know that they could be able to access the course materials any where in the world outside Kaduna state or outside Nigeria.

In his welcome address the Director Centre for human Resources development, CHRD, Professor Aminu Umar said ” the 8th inter house competition of a NOUN staff school is an annual event that takes place from time to time, saying “we are lucky by god grace we are having it in February these year”.

“This is organized to redeem and rijig kiddles, the talents of our pupils to be able to appreciate that all works without play makes jack a dull boy, and as you can see very well it means that they are in the sun, they are very much comfortable to see that we start these event and I’m very happy that a sizable number of our parents are here to see what their wards can perform.

“I want to let you know the 21 Century knowledge is give your talent, intelligence and vocation, so your child maybe good in classroom but maybe bad in vocation, your child maybe bad in intelligence but maybe good in vocation ,your child maybe good in talent and maybe bad in vocation.

“We hope and pray you’ll give us demanding support and cooperation to ensure that we embark these new journey of supporting government policy of vocational skills right from the basic level. I welcome you all and hope and pray that we have a huge inter house competition.

Highlights of the event include 25 meters boys and girls Nursery, picking the balls, Frog race, boys and girls, 100 meters race, boys and girls,Sack race boys and girls, for Primary school pupils, mix relay boys and girls,Tug of war for parents and Teachers, Teacher race, men and women, presentation of medals, certificates and Trophies to the winners in various categories.
