OPINION: Danbaba Suntai Airport Runway Expansion: Paving the Way for Global Connectivity

The first phase of the upgrade of the runway at Danbaba Suntai Airport, Jalingo, has been successfully completed.
The runway now measures 2.4 kilometers in length and 75 meters in width—a width that exceeds the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) specification of 60 meters, further reinforcing our commitment to meeting and surpassing global aviation standards.
With these current specifications, the airport’s runway is capable of comfortably handling a wide range of aircraft, including:
Regional aircraft such as the ATR 42/72, Embraer E170/E190, and Bombardier CRJ series
Narrow-body jets like the Boeing 737 (700, 800, MAX 8) and Airbus A320 family (A318–A321)
Medium wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 757, 767, Airbus A300, A319, A330, and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10/MD-11
Even large wide-body and long-haul jets, like the Boeing 777, 787, and Airbus A340, with minimal limitations.
The second phase of the runway upgrade, which is already underway, involves extending the runway to 3 kilometers—a standard feature in major international airports. Once completed, Danbaba Suntai Airport will be equipped to fully accommodate long-haul aircraft and ultra-large aircraft such as the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger jet, and the Antonov An-124/An-225 for heavy cargo operations.
This strategic investment in aviation infrastructure aligns with the vision of the Governor of Taraba State, His Excellency Dr. Agbu Kefas, who is deeply committed to aviation excellence and opening up Taraba’s airspace and economy to the world. Under his leadership, the state is taking bold steps to integrate into the national and global air transport network, facilitating tourism, trade, and development.
