Cow Disease: Taraba Govt Flags Off Treatment of Livestock

The Taraba State Government has flagged off the treatment of livestock affected by the outbreak Haemorrhagic septicemia disease in Sardauna Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking at the ceremony at a cattle ranch in Gembu, headquarters of Sardauna Local Government Area, the Taraba State Commissioner of Agriculture and Food Security, Professor Nicholas Namessan Oliver said the exercise would mitigate the spread of the Haemorrhagic septicaemia disease that is affecting livestock in the area.
Represented by Deputy Director Veterinary Services of the Ministry, the Commissioner said the first phase of the exercise was designed to treat affected animals before general vaccination of livestock in Sardauna Local Government Area.
He pledged the commitment of Governor Agbu Kefas to also extend the vaccination to the neighbouring local government areas to check the spread of the disease.
The Commissioner solicited the maximum of all herders to enable the government achieve its good intention of bringing the situation under control.
Also speaking, the Chairman of Sardauna Local Government Council, Hon Mohammed Umar charged headers not to panic but to bring out their cattle for treatment.
Represented by the Chief of Staff, Salihu Bodel, the Chairman thanked Governor Agbu Kefas for his quick intervention through provision of drugs to treat the animals.
Giving an overview of the disease, Head of Taraba State Veterinary Services, Dr Gideon Ibrahim explained that the livestock disease, hemorrhagic septicemia is mainly found on the high land mostly on the Mambilla Plateau which normally affects the heart, lung and other vital organs of animals.
He encouraged people on the plateau to always ensure they vaccinate their livestock annually.
On his part, Divisional Veterinary Officer of Sardauna Local Government Area, Dr Godwin Mangbon said the veterinary officers are fully ready for the exercise in line with the commitment of the Taraba State Government.
Other stakeholders at the event, appreciated Governor Agbu Kefas for his quick response to the out break and called on the people of Sardauna Local Government Area especially headers to support the exercise.
As at the time of filling this report, the team of veterinary officers from the State and Sardauna Local Government Area have already commencement treatment of the livestock in Furmi, Kwarakwara, Dorofi, Mayo Ndaga and other communities.
