Borno Children leaders condemns assault on school girls over mangoes

The Borno State Children Parliamentarians have condemned the recent brutal assault on two school girls by couples over unauthorized plucking of mangoes in their compound.
Speaking at a Press briefing in Maiduguri, the Speaker of State Children Parliament, Fatima Chiroma Zana, urged the state government to ensure the perpetrators face strict penalties.
Recall that a video recently went viral showing a couple physically assaulting the school girls for plucking mangoes in their compound.
Addressing concern over the issue, Fatima called on the government to strengthen and enforce child protection law in Borno state.
In her words, “perpetrators of child abuse must face strict penalties to serve as a deterrent to others.
“Authorities must swiftly arrest and prosecute future offenders to discourage violence against children.
“Children, parents, and community members should be encouraged to report cases of abuse promptly”.
She acknowledged the efforts of the state government, police force, NSCDC, child rights activists, and concerned citizens who have amplified the case, noting that collective action has ensured that justice is pursued.
She maintained that proper reporting channels should be established and widely published to ensure swift response to child abuse cases.
In the same vein, a non-governmental organization, the Centre for Advocacy Transparency and Accountability Initiative (CATAI ), joined the Children’s Parliament and State Ministry of Women Affairs to condemn the unholy incident and described it as a grave violation of children’s rights and dignity.
Child Protection Program Coordinator CATAI, Kanayo Jubal, expressed worries that despite commendable efforts by the state government in enacting child protection laws, cases of physical abuse, child labour , and neglect remain rampant.
He emphasized the urgent needs for stronger enforcement of existing laws and greater public awareness of children’s rights.
“The safety and well-being of children is a collective responsibility that requires the commitment of government agencies, civil society, community leaders, and families. No child should suffer brutality, humiliation, or violence in any form.” He declared.
