Bauchi Students Champion Peacebuilding Through Interfaith Initiatives

Students from tertiary institutions in Bauchi State are leading peacebuilding efforts to strengthen harmonious coexistence among the state’s diverse ethnic and religious communities.
The initiative, spearheaded by a non-governmental organization “Search for Common Ground”, with support from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, includes a film screening titled, “Bridging the Abyss” under the “Promoting Freedom of Religion or Belief (FoRB)” project.
Participating students, now recognized as “FoRB Champions”, are tasked with combating discrimination, advocating for religious freedom, and fostering tolerance within their institutions.
Project Manager Mr. Gaius Dachet explained that the programme aims to promote human rights within religious contexts, as many conflicts stem from intolerance and disrespect for differing beliefs.
“By encouraging mutual respect for all faiths, we can significantly reduce religious crises,” Dachet stated.
He added that the project utilizes early warning systems to prevent marginalization and discrimination across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Other strategies include radio engagements and social media campaigns to raise awareness and promote interfaith harmony.
Senior Media Officer Ms. Katlong Dasat noted that the film-based approach helps participants connect more deeply with the message.
She expressed satisfaction with the students’ enthusiastic participation, stating that they will serve as peace ambassadors, fostering understanding and respect for diverse beliefs in their schools.
The event attracted students from nearly all tertiary institutions in Bauchi, reinforcing their commitment to a more inclusive society.
