Bauchi NGO Reports Over 120 Suspected Meningitis Cases, Confirmed in 6 Months

As the world recognizes Cerebrospinal Fever, commonly known as Meningitis, residents of Bauchi State have been urged to get vaccinated to protect their health.
Mallam Sodangi Adam Chindo, Executive Director of the Muslims Aid Initiative Nigeria (MAIN), made this recommendation during a sensitization workshop in Bauchi, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness given the disease’s severe impact.

“The Muslim Aid organization is a member of the Confederation of Meningitis Organizations (COMO), a global network dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of this disease,” Malam Sodangi explained.
He noted that between October 2023 and March 2024, Nigeria reported 1,742 suspected cases of Meningitis, with Bauchi State accounting for 123 of those cases.
Malam Sodangi stated that October 5th has been designated as a day to raise awareness about the disease, highlighting Nigeria’s position within the Meningitis belt and the importance of educating the public about its causes and preventive measures.
The organization aims to combat diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, while also promoting reproductive health, human rights, and providing support to widows and orphans through integrated social services.
“In Bauchi, our theme for this year’s awareness campaign is ‘Defeating Meningitis Using Multiple Channels,’ which involves leveraging both traditional and social media to reach grassroots communities,” he added.
During the workshop, Mrs. Margret Samuel Babuje, the MAIN Program Coordinator, encouraged participants to share the knowledge they gained with others.
“Meningitis is a deadly disease, making it crucial for key stakeholders to educate the public on its causes and preventive measures,” Mrs. Margret emphasized.
She also called on the state government and other stakeholders to support efforts in combating the disease.
“I urge the state government to assist in mobilizing the community, as well as providing vaccines and manpower for the benefit of the populace, particularly in rural areas,” she stated.
Some of the participants, Usman Lawan and Khadija Shehu expressed their commitment to disseminating the information they learned to raise awareness about the dangers of meningitis.
They praised the NGO for its dedication to improving healthcare, education, and social services and encouraged other civil society organizations to follow suit.
