Bauchi Legislates for Law to Regulate Orphans, Vulnerable

A bill for a law to repeal the Bauchi State Orphans and Vulnerable children law 2023 and reenact the law to provide for the establishment of the BASOVCA was over the weekend passed second reading at the State House of Assembly.
The bill is sponsored by the member representing Kirfi constituency, Barrister Habib Umar during plenary presided by speaker Abubakar Y. Sulaiman.
Leading a debate on the bill, the presenter said the objectives of the agency is to ensure the protection of orphans and vulnerable children through improved policy and legislation and by channeling resources to communities particularly those with disproportionate number of orphans.
Others, he said, include to strengthen the capacity of families to protect and care for the orphans and vulnerable by prolonging the lives of parents and caregivers.
The bill is also geared to provide economic, psychosocial, and other risks, as well as to establish mechanism that will facilitate access to essential services and reduce inequalities.
The Speaker, Abubakar Yakubu Suleiman, following voice votes directed for the bill to be referred to the house committee on cabinet and is given two weeks to report back for legislation.
Dahiru also appealed to government through relevant agencies to consider the renovation of the environment to make it more habitable for the children to stay while undergoing rehabilitation.
In another development, the member representing Zungur/Galambi constituency Sa’idu Yusuf Ahmed similarly called on the state government to come up with modalities to ensure prompt settlement of all benefits of retired workforce in the state.
