Speaking at the launching held at the Government House, Bauchi, yesterday, the Governor announced donations of over N12m on behalf of the three arms of government and other critical stakeholders in the state.

Represented by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Auwal Jatau, he noted that generous contribution to the coffers of the Nigerian Legion will serve as an appreciation and support for those patriotic and courageous Nigerians who sacrificed their lives to preserve the unity and sovereignty of the country.

“The annual observance of this important event underscores the unwavering concern and appreciation of the Federal and State Governments for our patriotic and gallant compatriots who sacrificed their comfort and lives to protect and preserve the territorial Integrity, as well as ensure the existence of our great country as a single indivisible entity, especially during the two World Wars and the Nigerian Civil War. Indeed, members of our armed forces who went through the horrendous experience of these wars have paid their dues to our nation.”

He noted that, over the years, Government has been bearing the responsibility of catering for the members of the Nigerian Legion and Ex-Servicemen, saying “it is however a matter of concern that people have forgotten the great sacrifices of these men whose efforts have made it possible for us to enjoy our lives today.”

The Governor said the State Government on its part, has been making effort to ensure the comfort of the Legionnaires and their families by engaging them in gainful employment in Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies and through poverty alleviation schemes and palliative measures.

He then assured the Legionnaires that state Government will continue to assist them to provide succour to them, adding that the families of these heroes really need support, care and compassion from all.

On his part, the chairman of legionnaires in Bauchi state, Garba Itas commended the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed for the tremendous support given to legionnaires and promised to reciprocate the gesture by supporting the administration to sustain maintenance of peace and security in the state.
