In a historic and visionary move, Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has signed into law the bill establishing the Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture and Climate Action, sending a strong signal of the state’s readiness to confront the twin challenges of climate change and food insecurity.
The signing, which took place barely weeks after the Taraba State House of Assembly passed the bill, marks a milestone in Nigeria’s educational and agricultural development—one that fuses scientific research, sustainable farming, environmental protection, and regional diplomacy into a single bold initiative.
Located on the elevated plains of the Mambilla Plateau in Gembu, the institution will be the first of its kind in Nigeria—specialized in tropical agriculture and climate action.
With its lush, temperate climate and proximity to the Cameroon border, the plateau offers a natural laboratory for high-altitude and climate-sensitive agriculture. Here, science and soil will meet in the most practical ways—developing crops that can withstand climate shocks and teaching new generations how to farm sustainably.

The governor also envisions strong bilateral engagement with Cameroon in agricultural trade, research, and student exchange—potentially positioning Taraba as a gateway for regional development diplomacy.
